Herbal (EPM, ulcers)

Herbal Remedies

We use herbs for reproduction, de-worming, EPM, immune boosting, etc. This information is based on our personal research and experience.

For each formula this is the protocol:

Once the herbs are received place in a flat rectangular Rubbermaid type container with a lid. The container will be best if it is not see-through as the herbs, like hay, will lose their nutritional value when exposed to sunlight, moisture and too much air exchange. So keep it sealed between uses.

Placing all the herbs in the container mix thoroughly. Get a one ounce vitamin scoop and feed according to their respective protocols. Use a very sticky sweet feed like Omolene 100 or Impact Texturized, Great Value vegetable oil (100% soybean)-its cheapest by the gallon at Walmart/equivalent. Mix 1/2 3lb scoop of grain, 1/2 cup oil and herbs together so it can not be separated.

I order the “parts” in pounds and this will make a lot. If you are just doing a single to a few animals you may want to use oz for “parts”. Herbs can be ordered from Star West Botanicals or Rose Mountain Herbs.  Star West has more increments of volume available and tends to be faster. Keep all herbs in a cool dark place. They are plants and sunlight and exposure causes the nutrition to diminish.

Tum Tum Recipe for Ulcers, Diarrhea, Nervous Tummy
  • 1 part marshmallow root powder
  • 1 part apple pectin powder
  • 1 part psyllium husk powder
  • 1 part slippery elm bark powder
  • 1 part bentonite clay powder
  • 1 part charcoal, activated powder (hardwood)
  • 1 part brown flax seed powder
  • 1 part fennel seed powder
  • 1 part ginger root powder
  • 1 part peppermint leaf powder
  • 1/2 part garlic powder
  • 1/4 cayenne powder (40btu)

Tummy Health:

1 scoop 2x daily for 10 days, then 1 scoop daily for 60 days. Longer for hind gut, severe ulcer or colitis cases. 1/2 scoop during training is a good practice with the sensitive ones. If they stress at shows or tend to have loose stools the first day start two days prior to leaving.

This is amazing for foals who have diarrhea issues. You can give a lot if necessary. If you do put them also on electrolytes or salt to encourage plenty of water intake then just monitor the stools. Back off as they begin to have substance.

  • 1 part Echinacea root powder
  • 1 peppermint leaf powder
  • 2 part Epizote herb
  • 1 part pumpkin seed powder
  • 2 part papaya leaf
  • 1 part fenugreek seed powder
  • 1/2 part garlic powder
  • 1/4 part cayenne (40btu)

I worm 50 horses for 5 days with this recipe and the “parts” are pounds. If you are doing a small number then use oz instead. If you have a lot left over put in a cold place to store, away from sunlight.  Fresher is more effective so if it has been a few months just increase the dose by half when feeding.

Wormer for maintenance use:

1 scoop for 5 days of every month for traveling, young, training, pregnant and lactating mares. The old good keepers every other month is fine. It is best to start a day or two prior to the full moon cycle when you can. Parasite come out to play the most during these cycles and you will murder more of them at these times. But if thats not convienent dont skip it! –  just do it when it is.

For EPM:

Start on 1 scoop AM&PM for 5 days, then once daily for 30 days-90 days or until the muscle, movement and what is natural is 90% back or more. At 90 days 1/2 scoop if a full recovery has not been achieved. Double the amount of Echinacea powder recommended in regular wormer for EPM. PEMF treatments are highly recommended to regain normal muscle movement and connective tissue. If your EPM horse is the nervous type or is exhibiting nervous behavior, we recommend combining this recipe with the Tum Tum recipe to treat for ulcers, as most EPM horses also have ulcers in our experience.

Maricle for hormone balance in broodmares

This herbal combination was designed for the support and nutritional supplementation of mares preparing for breeding. These herbs contain the raw material needed by the body to produce normal, healthy hormone levels naturally in the body. It is safe to use with any type of medical drugs such as progesterone, lutylice, HCG, bute, etc. Mix as suggested for the other herbal combinations. Feed two (powder vitamin scoops) one oz scoops per day for 10 days. Then one scoop per day. For difficult breeders two scoops may be required for an extended period of time. Blood testing for progesterone levels will help to guage her needs. Mares that do not carry without regumate may not need it if this is used in its place.

This is for Stallions for use during breeding season. It helps increase libido, proper function and overall quality of semen. Increases the longevity of the semen´s cooled duration. I suggests beginning 30 days prior to breeding season. Also vitamins B, C and E are very helpful and would suggest them in supplementation as well.
